Founded in 2016, Mike Madness is a 3-on-3 basketball tournament and live music after party fundraiser for research and awareness of Lewy Body Dementia, the second leading cause of dementia after Alzheimer’s.
Because Lewy Body symptoms resemble a combination of Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases, it is not widely known and often misdiagnosed.
Robin Williams died of it without ever knowing he had the disease. Ted Turner has it.
Award-winning, Birmingham-based journalist Mike Oliver was diagnosed with Lewy Body Dementia in 2016. Despite getting an early diagnosis, Mike died March 4, 2024. However, as he journeyed with the disease, Mike used his passions - writing, basketball and music - to spread awareness and support research for a cure.
In honor of Mike’s life, we will again hold Mike Madness this year, Mike Madness will be held on August 10, 2024, with the tournament at the UAB Recreation Center and after party at Trim Tab in Birmingham, Alabama.
